Short Film Review: Éist | A grandfather, a grandson and a journey to the sea. Holly Buckley leans in for Roisin Kearney's powerful short Éist, starring Stephen Rea.

There is a moment early in Éist when teenage protagonist Tommy (Louis Kirwan) is more focused on his phone than the people around him. He is reminded by his father (Aaron Monaghan) to acknowledge his grandfather. This is a small and yet familiar interaction that quietly establishes the rich emotional terrain of Róisín Kearney’s latest short film.

Verdigris review | Irish director Patricia Kelly’s remarkable debut is a delicate drama about tricky subjects
The Irish Times

Verdigris, Patricia Kelly’s remarkable debut feature, is a lovely tale of unlikely friendship, inspired by her experiences as a census enumerator in Dublin’s north inner city. After being made redundant, Kelly, who had presided over several low-budget short films, took a leap of faith with her own production company, MnáMná Films, to bring a first feature to life. Thank goodness she did.

It’s very rare that self-financed feature films turn out as well as Cathal Nally’s Be Good or Be Gone. What makes this even more impressive is that it’s Nally’s feature debut.

With two very strong, nuanced performances, Martin and Mills lead with an undeniable capability to connect with and control the narrative. Supporting the tight script and shining performances is a moody score by two-time Emmy nominated Joseph Conlan. Ranging from high tension, to sobering lows, his score is present only when required as a reinforcement of the action on-screen.
